The New Entered Apprentice Mason

You now stand at the beginning of your Masonic journey like every Mason before you. You have Entered the Craft and are now an Apprentice. Just like in Craft Lodges of old, a more experienced member of the Lodge has been assigned as your mentor and guide to assist you to learn and grow in our Craft. Your mentor "will guard the landmarks from encroachments" and answer your questions to the best of his ability and/or seek out an answer for you when he needs to. To this day, my bond with my mentor and the bonds that I have formed with brethren whom I have mentored are very unique and special to me. In my case, my mentor(s) have continued to 'watch over me' as I have proceeded through the officer chairs, providing sound guidance when I have needed it. Having their example, I also have done my best to support the brethren whom I mentored long after they have proceeded through their third degree.

You have now gone through the ceremony of your initiation. You have seen and heard the secrets and all the extensive details in the Junior Warden's lecture. You are now a Mason. If you are anything like me (or any other mason I have every spoken to), you have questions. You may not even know what the questions are. You don't know what you don't know. There were so many important items in the various charges which you heard and wanted to remember.

You are not alone in these thoughts. Many brethren are concerned about remembering all of the 'things' that they wanted to remember so that they do not look foolish or make mistakes at the next meeting. They want to know, "How do I enter / leave the Lodge? How do I address my fellow brethren and how do I know the proper title? etc." They also knew that they would be asked questions their family and friends about the ceremony and they were not sure what they could say and what was secret.
